Musketawa Trail

Muskegon County is home to three trails: The City of Muskegon Lakeshore Trail, The Musketawa Trail on the east side of the county and the Hart-Montague Trail State Park in the northern section of Muskegon County.

Lakeshore Trail
City of Muskegon Lakeshore Trail


The nearly 10 mile, paved Lakeshore Trail is designed to provide users a convenient, relaxing and safe cycling environment with beautiful views including Lake Michigan, Muskegon Lake, dunes, parks, and the City of Muskegon. You can reach the trail directly from the Lake Express terminal. Bike to the beach by following Lakeshore Drive west along the dedicated bike lane to Pere Marquette Park. The trail loops around the park and includes great views of Lake Michigan, the South Pier Light Station and the Muskegon Channel and provides access to attractions and dining options. By traveling east from the Lake Express terminal along the Lakeshore Trail, you will reach Downtown Muskegon, Heritage Landing and the paved north portion of the trail which follows Shoreline Drive and Muskegon Lake.The Lakeshore Trail gives you pedestrian access to historic and maritime attractions, dining venues, lodging options and seasonal festivals. Parking is available at Pere Marquette Park (southern trail head), Heritage Landing (approximate mid-point), the Muskegon Lake Nature Preserve (North Muskegon trail head), as well as various marked spots along Lakeshore Drive. The Lakeshore Trail is ideal for beginners with plenty of places to park and rest along the trail.

The Musketawa Trail


The Musketawa Trail is a 26 mile paved recreational trail, from Muskegon to Marne , past farmlands and wetlands, over creeks, and through villages. It's a four-season adventure for the outdoor enthusiast, living healthy and having fun. The trail can be enjoyed by bikers, snowmobilers, horseback riders, inline skaters, cross-county skiers, wheelchair travelers, hikers and nature lovers.

Directions:
US 31 to Sherman Blvd East. Continue past shopping area. Sherman Blvd. turns into Black Creek Rd. Turn Left (east) on Broadway (Wesco Gas Station near corner). Trail head parking area is about 1 mile on the left on Broadway.

Alternate Directions by bicycle from the Lakeshore Trail:
There is a proposed future connection from the Lakeshore Trail from the City of Muskegon downtown area to the Musketawa Trail. An alternate route to the Musketawa Trail from the City of Muskegon by bicycle is to take Laketon Ave. East under US 31, turn right on Port City Blvd., follow road which turns into Latimer then Black Creek Rd., Trail head is on left on Black Creek Rd. before Sherman Blvd. No vehicle parking is available at this trail head.

Directions by bicycle from the Lake Express Terminal:
Follow Lakeshore Dr. East to Southern Ave. (Lakeshore Dr. veers to the left about 1 block past Wasserman Flower and Gift Shop. If you continue straight you will be on Laketon Ave., which is a much busier route.) Turn Right on Southern Ave. Cross Seaway Dr. (Business 31) and look for the Lakeshore Trail on your right. Follow the Lakeshore Trail along Laketon Ave. until it ends. Continue on Laketon Ave. East under US 31, turn right on Port City Blvd., follow road which turns into Latimer then Black Creek Rd., Trail head is on left on Black Creek Rd. before Sherman Blvd. No vehicle parking is available at this trail head.

Hart-Montague State Park Trail

Hart-Montague Trail State Park


The Hart-Montague Trail State Park is a paved, 22.5-mile trail passing through rural, forested lands. Scenic overlooks and picnic areas are located along the route.The trail can be used for hiking, bicycling, cross county skiing and snowmobiling. Horseback riding is allowed on portions of the trail but never on the asphalt portion. The trail now extends into Whitehall.
