Cinema Sunday: Alice (Neco z Alenky)
The Muskegon Museum of Art is pleased to continue its series of film screenings that focus on exploring the art of cinema. Today's film is Alice (Neco z Alenky) Director: Jan Švankmajer, 1988 (86 minutes.) Master animator and puppeteer Jan Švankmajer, a member of the Czech Surrealist Party, achieved a lifetime’s ambition in this highly anarchistic adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Deep beneath layers of curiosity, bewilderment, and cruelty, Švankmajer’s Alice discovers the true home of childhood, one in which petulant dolls, fugitive scraps of rubbish, common household furniture, and even slabs of meat all lead a life of their own, a fluid place where the protective division between the individual and the world has yet to take hold. The film begins at 2:00 p.m. at the Muskegon Museum of Art (296 W. Webster Ave in Downtown Muskegon). The programmer and host: E.J. Hamacher. The movie is free with museum membership or with museum admission. For more information call 231-720-2571. www.muskegonartmuseum.org

Muskegon Civic Theatre Presents "Witness for the Prosecution"
Only the grand dame of mystery, Agatha Christie, could have conceived of this suspenseful courtroom thriller and topped it off with a triple-flip ending. Over the strenuous objections of his private nurse, Miss Plimsoll, Sir Wilfred Robarts, a master barrister in ill health, takes on the case of Leonard Vole, a young man accused of murdering a wealthy old woman. The testimony of his wife, Christine, should ensure his acquittal, but she is called, instead, as a witness for the prosecution. For a fee, a mysterious woman provides Sir Wilfred with some damning evidence and testimony against Christine, and the plot twists and turns keep coming until the dramatic climax when Leonard and Christine confront each other in the courtroom. Tickets range from $14 - $16 and are available at the Frauenthal Box Office Monday - Friday 11 AM - 5 PM and Startickets 800-585-3737. Cinema Sunday: The Beauty and the Beast (La Belle et la Bęte)
The Muskegon Museum of Art is pleased to continue its series of film screenings that focus on exploring the art of cinema. Today's film is The Beauty and the Beast (La Belle et la Bęte). Director: Jean Cocteau, 1946 (93 minutes) French with English subtitles It is soon clear, in this lush adaptation
of the classic French fairy tale, where Cocteau’s sympathies lie. The exquisite details of the Beast’s castle, his commanding and stately demeanor, and his poetic grasp of honor and romance are all drawn in sharp contrast to the petty, gossiping, money-obsessed humans that trespass in his gardens and covet his possessions. Beneath one of the most gorgeous make-up designs in film history, Jean Marais stars as the
unjustly reviled suitor whose animal magnetism makes Prince Charming look like a milksop.

Edward Curtis: Selections from The North American Indian
In 1907, photographer Edward Curtis began work on a series of books and portfolios titled The North American Indian. The intent of the project was to document, both in writing and photography, the lives and cultures of the tribes living in the United States. The final project was comprised of 20 leather bound books, each with an accompanying photographic portfolio, for a total of 2,228 illustrations. The North American Indian was available as a subscription, but due to the price, only about 220 were ever produced. The Hackley Public Library opened a subscription in 1908 and completed its set in 1930. In 1976 the complete set was transferred to the Muskegon Museum of Art as a permanent loan. This is the second of two exhibitions that will display highlights from this extensive collection. The exhibit is at the Muskegon Museum of Art located at 296 W. Webster Ave in Downtown Muskegon. Inspired: The Corky Tuttle Glass Legacy
The Muskegon Museum of Art’s ongoing interest in collecting and exhibiting contemporary studio glass is due, in no small part, to the early efforts of C. Corcoran Tuttle. "Corky" Tuttle owned a gallery in downtown Muskegon and was an early proponent of the American studio glass movement. Through her connections, Corky coordinated with other Museum supporters to acquire studio glass for the permanent collection, and donated her first glass piece in 1980.. The exhibit is at the Muskegon Museum of Art located at 296 W. Webster Ave in Downtown Muskegon. For more information call 231-720-2570. www.muskegonartmuseum.org

Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall: Art Inspired by Fairy Tales
Artwork by a select group of artist is featured in this themed invitational exhibition organized by the Muskegon Museum of Art. Folk and fairy tales are found in cultures around the world and continue to fascinate, both emotionally and intellectually. They have been altered and adapted by following generations as tastes and cultures develop and change. Illustrations of these tales have come to define them as much as the words, and many children know these stories only through animated movies and picture books. This exhibition invites artists to turn their hand to fairy tales and create art that speaks to the contemporary impression of the stories. The exhibit is at the Muskegon Museum of Art located at 296 W. Webster Ave in Downtown Muskegon. For more information call 231-720-2570. www.muskegonartmuseum.org
